2008 VW Touareg 2 V10 TDI

I just completed a test drive on the 2008 Volkswagen Touareg 2 V10TDI twin turbo diesel. Get ready to visit the gas station on a regular basis as this almost $80,000.00 vehicle ($79,080.00) averaged 15.5 MPG around town and 19 on the highway.

Driving Experience

The TDI is quick off the line and can enter highways and pass vehicles like a Cheetah going after its prey. VW states this Toureag can propel from 0-60 in a mere 7.5 seconds but it does suffer from turbo lag. You must use low sulphur diesel fuel on the TDI.

The TDI has 19-inch wheels, which ride on an air suspension system. This air suspension system lets you dial in a firmness setting, but only the middle one satisfies on-road. The air system’s main asset is providing up to 11.8 inches of off-road clearance.

Touareg 2 feels a bit slow in fast lane changes and is not as agile as lighter SUV’s such as the Acura MDX or Lexus RX. The TDI corners like a sports car and has an AWD for wet or dry surfaces. Wind and road noise are at a minimum inside the cabin as you drive down the highway.

Safety

The Touareg 2 is loaded with the following safety features: Xeon headlights, heated washer nozzles, keyless entry, rain sensing wipers, rearview camera, 6 air bags, ABS brakes, Anti Slip Regulation, automatic lock and unlock doors, automatic up and down windows and daytime running lights.

Inside

Gauges, dash and console all have a contemporary and upscale design. The seating is firm and plush and supports you when making sharp turns. There is plenty of headroom for taller drivers and passengers. The Stereo system controls are positioned for easy access and have a symphonic quality. The climate control system is easy to use and the controls are easy to access. The navigation is useful and fairly easy to use once you read the instructions several times. The quality of materials used inside the cabin spells luxury.

The power tilt and telescopic steering wheel and memory help drivers find an ideal position. The step-in is a bit higher than some of its crossover SUVs companions, but entry or exit isn’t difficult.

The cargo area is finished with an upscale feel and is tall and wide for large items. The rear seatbacks lay flat after you remove the headrests for additional storage space.

A button at the bottom of the lift gate automatically closes the hatch when you touch the button.

Summary

The Touareg 2 V10 TDI is pricey for a VW but on equal in value to such SUV rivals as Lexus, BMW and Mercedes-Benz. My recommendation is to purchase the Torareg with the V6 or V8 engines to reduce your MSRP well under my test vehicles sticker price of $79,080.00.
